Chapter Twenty-Seven

Aiden and I settle on leaving the palace just before dawn. The War Council agrees that we need to see the House of Peace in the daylight to know what is going on. My glamour magic, now better developed with more practice, should be able to shield us once we’re there, and in an emergency, Aiden’s shapeshifting should be enough to get us out. After a very early evening to bed, Aiden and I meet in the stables when it’s still dark out. We want the twilight to cover us as we ride out.

“Hey,” I say quietly as I attach my satchel to the side of my horse.

“Hey,” Aiden replies before kissing my cheek. “Are you ready?”

“Yes.” I smile. “It feels good to be going on another adventure together isn’t it?”

Aiden chuckles and teases, “You were always good at getting me into trouble.” He shoots me a quick wink. “At least now you can use magic.”

“Hey, I had some solid moves as a mortal woman. Even you had a hard time keeping up with me.”

Aiden chuckles. “Oh, of course.” I roll my eyes at the hint of condescension in his tone. But you’re a full-fledged Fae Lady now. Your adventuring style may have changed in the last several months.”

I place my foot in the left stirrup and swing my leg over my horse. “Well, let’s find out, shall we?” As Aiden climbs onto his steed, we ride out of the stables and towards the House of Peace.

Riding with Aiden feels like old times with the wind in our hair and the world at our backs. Because the sun hasn’t risen yet, we are able to ride right down the main streets of the town. It’s like seeing the world again in a whole new light. The buildings are empty and quiet, yet I can almost sense an inkling of what life looks like inside of them. Every once in a while, I spot a lonely bartender cleaning up the tipped-over beer mugs and broken wooden remnants of a wild night out. They don’t look up to see Aiden and me, which is all the better.

When we leave the House of the Evening behind, we take the country roads and small village streets toward Craine. It takes nearly two days to reach the edge of the House of Peace. We camp outside in a forest on the outskirts of the House of Wind to avoid being seen. Stopping inside any town or village now could alert the enemy to our movements. When we finally approach the city, Aiden pulls his horse alongside mine and motions for me to slow down. I pull the reins to slow my horse to a trot. “We should get ready now; we’re almost on top of Craine,” he urges. “Are you sure your magic is strong enough to hold a glamour over both of us?”

“Of course it is,” I assure him. “I wouldn’t have agreed to the plan if it wasn’t. I’m not going to put you at risk.
